Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhau Beej, Yama Dwitiya, and Bhai Phonta, is celebrated on the Dwitiya Tithi (second lunar day) of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik. The festival’s name comes from the words “Bhai” meaning brother and “Dooj” meaning the second day after the new moon.
On this sacred day, sisters pray for the health, wealth, and longevity of their brothers by applying a tilak on their foreheads and offering sweets. In return, brothers give gifts and blessings as a promise of protection.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Yama, the God of Death, visited his sister Yamuna on this day. Yamuna welcomed him with a sacred tilak, symbolizing the love between siblings. Impressed by her devotion, Yama blessed her and declared that any brother receiving a tilak on this day would be protected from untimely death.

भाई दूज कार्तिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की द्वितीया तिथि को मनाया जाने वाला त्योहार है, जो भाई-बहन के अटूट प्रेम, स्नेह और सुरक्षा का प्रतीक है। पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, यमराज अपने बहन यमुना के घर आए थे। यमुना ने उन्हें सम्मानित करते हुए माथे पर तिलक लगाया और भोजन कराया। प्रसन्न होकर यमराज ने वरदान दिया कि इस दिन जो बहन अपने भाई को तिलक लगाएगी, उसके भाई की लंबी उम्र होगी और उसे अकाल मृत्यु का भय नहीं होगा। इसे यम द्वितीया या भातृ द्वितीया भी कहा जाता है।
भाई दूज की पूजा विधि
भाई दूज के दिन सुबह जल्दी उठकर स्नान करें। स्नान के बाद भगवान गणेश और यम देव की पूजा करें। बहनें अपने भाई को पूर्व या उत्तर दिशा की ओर मुख करके बिठाएं। उसके सिर पर रुमाल रखें और रोली व अक्षत से तिलक करें। फिर भाई के हाथ में कलावा बांधें, मिठाई खिलाएं और दीप प्रज्वलित कर आरती करें। अंत में भाई अपनी बहन के चरण स्पर्श कर आशीर्वाद लें।
